Our First Week in Kansas

We have officially been here one full week! WHAT A ROLLER COASTER it has been.

After 7 days, I'm not sure if we feel more settled in that we did last Sunday...but we're hopeful about the future here.

Here's a timeline leading up to our move:

It was a time filled with lots of packing, sorting, donating, dump runs, scheduling an end to our Utah utility services and a start to all our Kansas utilities and insurances, and endless documents/paperwork for mortgage. ALSO, getting all the kids application info for OpenEd Kansas (which required proof of residency by July 21...kind of hard when you don't own the house until July 23).

Friday, July 17:

We signed the papers to sell our house in Utah. From there the new owners gave us an extra week to stay there and get all packed up and moved out. It was really weird to live in a house that was "technically" no longer ours. We got funding by the end of the day, and became officially DEBT FREE for about 5 days. No mortgage, personal or student loans, credit cards, car payments. Debt free! (Until we purchased our Kansas house the following week).

Monday, July 20:

The buyers had asked if they could have some landscaping done while we were still there. So on Monday there were two big trailer trucks and a bobcat that showed up to grade the front lawn. After ripping out half the lawn, cutting our Google Fiber line, and breaking a sprinkler line (which sprayed everywhere and required me to access the shutoff valve) it was decided all work would resume Saturday, after we were all moved out.

Wednesday, July 22

I picked up the U-Haul truck. I had Aedan, Izzy, and Loki drive with me in the Highlander. They waited in the car while I made sure we had everything set to get the truck. Then, I got into the giant truck, and drove it home with them following behind.

After we got home, the kids excitedly explored the truck. Lillie and I worked on removing nails gunk and Metal Recycling Center. We had

Thursday, July 23

Official signing day for our Kansas House! A place we had never seen in person, but knew it was the place for us. We did a remote signing in our kitchen with a traveling notary, and then I went to the bank for the wire transfer of our down payment and closing costs. By the end of the day, we were officially home owners again!

Brett found a nail in the tire of the highlander. Costco was able to get us in to have it replaced. Being all wheel drive, it required us to replace all 4 tires. Lucky for that extra $1300 we got the day before, because that's just about how much it cost.

Green Cleaning: All-Natural (Borax-Free) DIY Powdered Laundry Detergent

WHY GREEN CLEANING? After my mom was diagnosed with cancer in December 2015, I took that as a wake-up call for our family to be more aware of the things that come in contact with our bodies. The food we eat, the things we have constant exposure to, and the overall care and awareness we have for our health...this all became more important to me than ever before. My first step was making a shift to green, homemade cleaners. I wanted to know EVERYTHING that was going into the cleaners that helped disinfect and cleanse the surfaces of where we ate, sat, slept or touched, and took special care for things that would specifically go on or into our bodies. I learned so many wonderful things as I started on my "green" mission. It was great to become more self-sufficient, to understand the science behind cleaning, and to realize how unnecessarily commercialized cleaning products had become. I cut out anything from my house that was toxic, and contained health warnings. If t...

The Pitfalls of Watching Too Much HGTV: EVOLUTION OF OUR KITCHEN

YE OLDE HOUSE We live in an old house. It was built in 1976, and in that year, all the houses on our street were debuted in the " Parade of Homes ". So, we're extra cool because our house was a Parade of Homes house, right? That's kinds of a big deal. Only the best and most innovative homes are showcased in the Parade of Homes. Super cool. Except...that was 43 years ago...and some of the stuff that came from the mid 70's is just plain weird. We love our house. It's a good house, and it's been good to us. BUT, being from the 70's, and never having had any major updates since then, there are a lot of odd things about the place. I think one of the most dangerous things a homeowner can do when they own an older house is to watch HGTV and other design shows. For me, it's both agonizing and inspiring. I'll fall in love with styles I see on Property Brothers or Fixer Upper (yaaaasss!), and then my wheels will start spinning in my head. I'll g...

The Good & The Beautiful

REFLECTION It was 10 weeks ago that we received the diagnosis about our baby during a routine prenatal ultrasound at 20 weeks. And let me tell you, what and interesting 10 weeks it's been. Interesting....and overwhelming, heavy, challenging, terrifying, prayerful, full of gratitude, hope, faith, and love. It's been some of the most life-changing 10 weeks of my existence. I love this picture of the baby. It shows his sweet little profile, but you can also see the obvious asymmetry of his heart, and that he left side is so tiny. I look at this picture and already know that he's a fighter. He inspires me to be my best FOR HIM so we can work through this and conquer his CHD together. I remember the first meeting we had with the cardiologist when he was going over the results of the fetal echocardiogram. The final diagnosis:  Hypoplastic Left heart Syndrome  (HLHS), one of the most severe congenital heart defects a person can have. It is fatal without...
